Armand E. Singer (1914-2007) compiled the most comprehensive
Bibliography of the Don Juan Theme.
A. E. Singer was Professor Emeritus at West Virginia University (WVU). His research interests in the Don Juan theme span literature and film, popular culture studies and the examination of sex and violence in contemporary culture. A graduate of the Université de Paris and Duke University, Singer has served as a Teaching Fellow, Instructor, Associate Professor and Professor of Romance Languages at WVU for 40 years. As Editor-in-Chief of WVU Philological Papers for over five decades, he has written extensively about the subject of Don Juan in such articles as Don Juan’s Women Have Their Day in Court and Don Juan Goes to the Movies. He is the author of A Bibilography of the Don Juan Theme, Versions and Criticism and subsequent supplements and has delivered related presentations, including a lecture entitled The Humorous Don Juan in Popular Culture. His articles Don Juan in America and Don Juan among the Psychiatrists have been translated into German and reproduced in Don Juan: Darstellung und Deutung. Singer was among others a Proposal Reader for the National Endowment for the Humanities in Washington, D.C., President of the WVU Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, member of the Board of Editors of The European Legacy.
